The Magic Cottage opens in the countryside where eight-year-old twins Asa and Prentiss Fallmark are spending the summer with their grandparents. Grammy and Papa set a goal for the month-long vacation: the twins are to investigate and stretch their imaginations without the use of television, electronic gadgets, or radio. Each morning, the brother and sister board their “imagination transporter” and head for adventures in Serendipity where they “build” the magic cottage and meet many new friends, who provide the children with adventures in which they must use their minds and imaginations to overcome conflict. Hints occur throughout the story that the grandparents know more about Serendipity than the children realize. Could it be that Grammy and Papa have magical powers?
